TAKE 5 WITH THE GOLD NEEDLES — HOSTED BY SOPHIE MARTIN, NEWHD RADIO
Take 5 on NEWHD Radio isn’t just another music segment—it’s a space where artists share their creative heartbeat while supporting inclusive employment for autistic individuals, people with disabilities, and veterans through Sophia’s Mission and NEWHD Media. This time, host Sophie Martin welcomes Mark English of The Gold Needles, the UK psych-beat band that continues to shape melodic rock with a modern twist.
THE GOLDEN TOUCH
From the first chords of “Turns to Gold” to their upcoming album Mood Elevator, The Gold Needles have built a sound that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly alive. Mark describes how the group’s writing never really stops:
“We write and record all the time. We’ve already got enough material for another record even before the new one drops.”
That continuous flow reflects their ethos—music as a living, breathing process. While the new album arrives this December, the band has kept the creative fires burning, recording new material every week.
INSPIRATION AND MEANING
Their shimmering single “Turns to Gold” wasn’t just an homage to their name—it grew from a conversation about the entertainment industry itself.
“Our singer Simon brought it in,” Mark recalls. “It’s about how everything you touch can ‘turn to gold,’ but also about the murkier side of the business.”
This duality—hope and reflection—runs through much of their work, giving The Gold Needles’ songs both surface sparkle and lyrical depth.
INFLUENCES THAT SHINE THROUGH
When asked how they blend classic and contemporary sounds, Mark smiles:
“We all like different things, but we’re all huge Beatles fans. Simon loves glam rock, Dave’s a Bowie disciple, Karl listens to everything, and I’m into Tom Petty, The Cars, The Stranglers—so all of that gets woven together.”
That eclecticism gives the band its layered personality. Listeners can hear vintage tones with modern production and arrangements that nod to both The Damned and Thin Lizzy—a sound both familiar and fresh.
FROM DEMOS TO DREAMS
One of the highlights of their new era is the re-recording of “Supernature,” one of the first songs they ever wrote together.
“We played it live for years but never recorded it properly,” Mark says. “After nearly a decade, it just felt right. The new version builds beautifully—from an acoustic opening to a prog-rock finale.”
That sense of patience and artistic evolution underscores the band’s authenticity. The Gold Needles don’t chase trends—they craft songs until they’re ready to be heard.
PARTNERSHIPS AND THE BIG STIR CONNECTION
The Gold Needles’ collaboration with Big Stir Records has roots that stretch back years.
“We’d known them since their days publishing Big Stir Magazine,” Mark explains. “I even wrote short fiction for them before we released music together.”
After a run with Jem Records, joining Big Stir felt like coming home. The label’s focus on melodic integrity and community perfectly complements The Gold Needles’ mission-driven creativity.
LIVE ENERGY: FROM LIVERPOOL TO THE WORLD
No story about the band would be complete without mentioning their performances at The Cavern Club, birthplace of Beatlemania.
“That first Cavern gig was magical,” Mark remembers. “People who had never seen us before started singing along mid-set. To connect like that, in such a historic place—it’s unforgettable.”
For a group that treasures musical connection, those moments affirm everything they do.
CRAFTING TOGETHER
Songwriting in The Gold Needles is a democratic process. Mark pens lyrics, Simon shapes melodies, and the rest of the band fills in the colors.
“Sometimes it starts with a riff, sometimes with a full song,” Mark explains. “We all bring something to the table, and it takes shape naturally.”
Their workflow keeps things organic, blending old-school collaboration with digital tools that make the process fluid across time and space.
EMBRACING CHANGE IN THE DIGITAL AGE
While the band members cherish their vinyl collections, they’ve adapted to the new streaming landscape.
“I use Apple Music more than Spotify,” Mark admits. “But I also co-host a weekly radio show where we highlight new and overlooked artists. That keeps us connected to what’s current.”
Balancing analog passion and digital reach, The Gold Needles bridge generations of listeners.
LOOKING AHEAD
With Mood Elevator due out at year’s end, the band is already planning its 2026 follow-up.
“It’s like presenting your baby to the world,” Mark says. “We’re proud of what we’ve made, and Big Stir’s support has been phenomenal.”
As they continue to record, perform, and inspire, The Gold Needles embody what Take 5 celebrates most—authentic artistry that connects hearts across borders.
