London-based indie electronic artist Rodney Cromwell is set to release his new ‘Exercise Class’ EP on June 14 via Happy Robots Records. This four-track EP follows his 2023 release ‘The Winter Palace Remixes’.
As a teaser for the new ‘Exercise Class’ EP, Cromwell has unveiled ‘Madeline Trip’, the shortest track on the EP at just 55 seconds. This electronic hauntological piece is inspired by Marcel Proust’s seven-volume novel ‘In Search of Lost Time’ and is typically the first song played to live audiences as Cromwell’s band takes the stage.
Rodney Cromwell is the solo project of Adam Cresswell, formerly of the 90s indie folk band Saloon and the 2000s electronic duo Arthur & Martha. Since debuting with his album ‘Age of Anxiety’, Cromwell has been featured in NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM, Post-Punk.com, and Bandcamp Daily. His music has received national radio play on BBC 6 Music in the UK, RTE in Ireland, and airplay in Tokyo and Spain’s RNE3, where he also recorded a live session.
Rodney Cromwell’s live performances are a joyful mixed-media experience, incorporating analog synths, video visuals, and live instrumentation, punctuated by his ‘offbeat wit’ (NME). Described as ‘a spiritual experience’, he has shared the stage with A Flock of Seagulls, Damo Suzuki, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Rowetta, M!R!M, and Steve Davis. In 2022, he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound and supported Blancmange on several dates, solidifying his reputation as one of the most exciting live acts in the electronic music scene.
The ‘Exercise Class’ EP, featuring deadpan spoken-word lyrics, melodic choruses, and Cromwell’s signature classic synth sound, draws influences from LCD Soundsystem, Metronomy, and New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’, as well as the iconic soundtracks of Jane Fonda workout videos. True to Cromwell’s retro-futuristic style, his new music is perfect for both the indie-disco dancefloor and a sweaty exercise studio.
‘Madeline Trip’ will be available digitally on May 24, on platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp. The full ‘Exercise Class’ EP, already available for pre-order, will be released on June 14.
