Onalaska, WI, April 26, 2024 – Vocal sensation Carlie Hanson has released a stirring cover of Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell,” paying tribute to the late Layne Staley on the anniversary of his passing. Her rendition breathes new life into this grunge classic, marking the 30th anniversary of the “Jar of Flies” album, with a nod to this milestone on the cover art.
Reflecting on her musical influences, Hanson said, “I grew up with my family playing Alice in Chains during long drives. It wasn’t until I explored their MTV Unplugged performance that I was truly inspired to cover ‘Nutshell’ in remembrance of Layne and Kurt Cobain. I’m grateful to Layne’s mom for allowing this tribute.”
Carlie Hanson’s version of “Nutshell” is poised to introduce this grunge anthem to a new generation. The song debuted live in collaboration with Cover Nation, earning praise from Layne Staley’s mother, Nancy McCallum, who remarked, “It is wonderful to see Layne’s music continue to resonate across generations. Layne would have wanted to embrace all his fans.”
Her rendition has also been celebrated by legendary national radio personality, Zach Martin, who described it as, “musical poetry in motion as her voice hits your musical soul, making a meaningful connection. Carlie makes ‘Nutshell’ her own masterpiece.”

Lyrics: “We chase misprinted lies We face the path of time And yet I fight, this battle all alone No one to cry to, no place to call home My gift of self is raped My privacy is raked And yet I fight, repeating in my head If I can’t be my own, I’d feel better dead.”

About Carlie Hanson: Carlie Hanson articulates the feelings of displacement through her emotionally charged music. At 23, her sophomore album “Wisconsin” explores the deep homesickness she experienced after moving from Wisconsin to Los Angeles. Hanson’s musical journey took off when viral videos of her singing in her car caught the attention of producers, leading to her move to Los Angeles at 17. Despite initial success, she often felt out of place, a theme she explores throughout her album. With each track, Hanson is increasingly melding her Midwestern roots with her new life on the West Coast, gaining confidence in her unique artistic voice.
