JJ Kennedy is not your typical radio personality; she’s also a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with an impressive 39-year career in NYC radio. Her journey began under the mentorship of radio icon Hal Jackson at WBLS during the dawn of disco’s introduction to New York airwaves. JJ’s versatile career spanned various genres, from Big Bands at WNEW to Country music at WKHK, Top 40 at WPLJ, Lite rock at WLTW, and Talk radio alongside the legendary John Gambling at WOR.
While on the air, calls from listeners seeking advice led JJ to pursue an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iona College. Now licensed and a Clinical member of the AAMFT, she has been in private practice for 15 years, merging her therapeutic expertise with her radio background.
Beyond her professional life, JJ dedicates her time to volunteer work, reading to children at PS130 in Chinatown and serving as the Chaplain for a local chapter of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Her family, including her train engineer husband, Charlie, and proud NYPD officer son, Matt, brings her joy.
Therapy, for JJ, extends beyond the counseling room to the pool, where swimming provides solace, and the dance floor, where pole dancing and country line stomping become therapeutic outlets. As JJ reflects on her journey, she sees herself as truly blessed, embracing the adventures that continue to unfold. In her unique blend of radio and therapy, JJ Kennedy stands as a testament to the joy that comes from doing what one loves and discovering new adventures along the way.
